Elsey National Park

We really enjoyed our stay here and it was good to be able to un hook from the caravan and go exploring. However we did get a fright one night when we woke suddenly with this very loud noise. I had no idea what it was but Lloyd said, don't worry its only a donkey. Sure enough the ranger said they have a problem in the park with feral donkeys, who would have thought. it certainly did not sound like dear Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh!
We did visit the Elsey Homstead which is a replica of the original home in the book, it was obviously very basic. We also had lunch at territory Manor where they have a pond and do feed the Barras.
Barramundi fish can live in sea water or fresh but only reproduce in salt water. These ones where rather large and you could hand feed them.
In the camp ground there where many birds to watch and then we unfortunately saw one of these!

Cane toads were introduced to the Queensland area in the 1930s to supposedly kill off the sugar cane beetle that they were having problems with. However it was not researched at all and the cane toads don't even eat them and couldn't anyway as the beetles are high up and the cane toad does not jump that high. They have become a massive problem as they are extremely poisonous to any animal that eats them. Evidently even sea water crocs have died from eating them. They are now in nearly every state in Australia and have been the reason many native species of  small reptiles and insects are nearly endangered. The female cane toad lays 8000 to 30000 eggs at a time and they reach adult hood in one year so you see why they have taken over the place. Everyone here absolutely hates them.
